A "Pause for Words"

Daddy Jim, a lion of a man, had been dead a half century the night his little girl stood before me at midnight, in the hallway of the home she’d lived in for six decades, nearly a hundred years weighing down the bags beneath her eyes, arms quivering with the weight of her seventy pounds against her walker, and said, “I’m so tired.” Can’t you sleep? I asked. She was nearly crying. “They’re making so much noise, my dad and brothers. They’re up playing cards.”

Don’t you worry, Grandma, I said. I’ll shut them up. And with all the crotchety moxie I’d inherited from that same sweet and formidable Irishwoman, I marched into her empty bedroom. Daddy Jim! I called, using my big voice. You be quiet now. Little Charlotte is trying to sleep.

The walker squeaked in, and she huffed and puffed to get herself down. “Thank you,” she said, and I tucked her in.
