A "Pause for Words"

Songbird Sonnet

I enjoy feeding and identifying all small songbirds,

capturing them in my impromptu photo shoots,

when a Cooper’s Hawk arrives in thunderous swoops,

until then my worries were of being a weirdo bird nerd

or of the hungry feral neighborhood cats I feed in herds,

now, this huge hawk dips and flies in loop-de-loops.

I’m fearful for those little birds he is targeting to scoop

into his beak. My protective instincts he has stirred.

I step outside to scare him off as the bright sun came out,

after seeing him fly from tree to tree, he darted away –

empty beak (I hope), I imagine him in an afternoon pout.

I rejoice as my little songbirds return to my feeders to stay,

chirp, chi-chirping cheery birdsong as they flutter all about.

I’m relieved doomsday hadn’t fallen on my little songbird café.
