A "Pause for Words"

Lost forsythia

Who knew the ground would be soft in February, so that when I exhume what would be your corpse, the dirt eats the shovel. I will not leave you breathing in your grave; I’ve come back for you. But you resist, and I want to fall into your tangle of roots and stay here with you. Trust that I will make you grow again, or deliver your death with dignity. I am lifeboat and executioner. Trust me when I hack at your tap root; a violent gesture, like gnawing off one’s hand to escape the trap. Trust that I have to hurt you to save you. You offered your children easily, I’ve wrapped them in burlap to keep them warm. Now it’s your turn: Let go and come with me.
