Member Highlight – February 2023

Hancock County would like to introduce you or reintroduce you to Mary Schuck. Mary is the owner of The Gilded Nest, a local shop specializing in local artisan merchandise, home decor and "previously read" Christian, classic and children’s books. Mary has lived in Greenfield on several occasions over the past thirty-one years, and currently lives within walking distance of downtown Greenfield with her husband, Greg, and their two oversized dogs. Mary’s shop is the culmination of her family history in retail and creativity. Her father is the original owner of Riley’s Emporium on Main St, her grandfather owned a mercantile and shoe stores in Illinois. Her mother is a talented Interior Designer, and Mary has a background in photography and a deep appreciation for the skills of local craftsmen and artisans.

Mary’s artistic roots are in editorial photography, having worked with photographers and magazines specializing in interior design and advertisement images. She also enjoys mixed media art, pencil sketches, refinishing furniture, and different styles of paper flowers. Her origami kusudama flowers are a favorite at The Gilded Nest, and her crepe paper roses are a personal favorite to give as gifts.

When the spirit moves, she also has a passion for creative writing. The driving force in Mary’s professional and creative endeavors is an abiding faith in a Creator that has given us purpose in our work, in our art and in community with each other.

Hancock County Arts is lucky to have Mary Schuck as a past board member and active member and promoter of the arts.

A "Pause for Words"

My stony heart

I collect the rocks you bring inside

from the cold; from your adventures. I collect them

from the places you leave them:

The laundry

the pantry

the stairs.

I keep them on the windowsill until it’s all filled up and then

they go outside again for you

to collect.
