JULY - at the Gallery

A "Pause for Words"

 Flashing an SOS

I miss the frenetic flickering of lightning bugs.

The thrill I had as a child, getting a Ball Jar,

Dad putting breathing holes in the lid

with his pocketknife so I could go on the chase,

guessing where one would blink next.

I could catch them and gently place each

inside my transparent jar filled with grass.

My prized friends I’d take home, put on my dresser

and watch them glow codes at me

before I drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, I’d set my lightning bugs free,

never worrying there’d come a time

where there wouldn’t be summer evenings

full of twinkling enjoyment.
