By Robert Indiana
Robert Indiana was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana on September 13, 1928. Adopted as an infant, he spent his childhood moving frequently throughout his namesake state. His artistic talent was evident at an early age, and its recognition by a first grade teacher encouraged his decision to become an artist. In 1942, Indiana moved to Indianapolis in order to attend Arsenal Technical High School, known for its strong arts curriculum. After graduating he spent three years in the U.S. Air Force and then studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in Maine, and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.

A "Pause for Words"
It’s a Leap Year
As the world spins us another day, what will you make
of that extra 24 hours that only graces us every four years?
Will you take notice of that brilliant cardinal staring at you,
and believe in the sent spirit it’s said to represent?
Will you try your hand at throwing pottery on the wheel,
or make a deep impression with that new linoleum cut?
Will you type “The End” on that novel you’ve been shoving aside
until you feel worthy as a writer with intriguing stories to tell?
How about booking that flight you’ve always postponed
until you have more time off from work or a lot more money?
Make those leaps while you can before your arthritic knees give out,
or you’ll fall into those same old ruts of another depleted year.
